Exploring the Shackleton Experience, Athy

The first stop was the Shackleton Experience Museum in Athy, Co. Kildare, a centre dedicated to the life and legacy of famed Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose roots lie in nearby Kilkea. Members enjoyed an engaging and informative tour featuring original artefacts, expedition accounts, and immersive displays that brought Shackleton’s extraordinary journeys to life.

The museum offered a fascinating insight into endurance, leadership, and Irish heritage—an inspiring beginning to the day.

Dinner at The Auld Shebeen Gastro Bar

Following the museum visit, the group travelled to The Auld Shebeen Gastro Bar, a popular riverside venue known for its warm atmosphere and excellent food. The Shed members enjoyed a relaxed and hearty meal, with plenty of conversation and laughter. It proved the perfect mid‑day stop to unwind and recharge before continuing their journey.

A Thought‑Provoking Visit to Donaghmore Famine Workhouse & Agricultural Museum

The final destination was the Donaghmore Famine Workhouse & Agricultural Museum in Co. Laois. Set within an original 19th‑century workhouse, the museum provided a powerful and moving look into Ireland’s social history during the famine era.

Members explored preserved workhouse rooms, historical records, and agricultural exhibits that traced rural life from the 1800s onward. The visit encouraged reflection on Ireland’s past and the resilience of communities who endured hardship and change.

A Day Strengthening Community Bonds

The annual summer trip once again highlighted the core values of the Silvermines Men’s Shed—friendship, shared experiences, and lifelong learning.
